My Goofball

When we get home, Charlotte is usually staring at us through the window. As we come through the door, she greets us and yodels in excitement.
Charlotte loves toys of any kind. She often sits on the couch chewing one. Often, she’ll drop the toy on the floor beside the couch. It’s hilarious to watch her contortions as she tries to get off the couch with as little effort as possible, in which her laziness gets the best of her and she gives up trying to retrieve the dropped toy.
Charlotte is really good at sleeping. Her daily routine is waking up on our bed and going outside to potty. She actively greets everyone as they wake up. But an hour after getting up, Charlotte is often asleep again–perhaps on the couch for a change of scenery. When she’s there in the evening, she will lay with her muzzle pointed high and will snore. Occasionally it is loud enough to compete with the TV.
Every now and then she yawns and makes sounds that I’ve never heard from a dog before. Charlotte is also really good at sighing. She often sounds like an exasperated teenager!

With five dogs, getting everyone out to potty is a little bit of a chore. It often means a different combination out at one time. But Charlotte loves to go outside. We joke she has FOMO–she will go outside with anyone, even if she was just out!
Charlotte really loves one of our other dogs-Stella. We got them both in 2024, but a few months apart. Stella was the first and was really shy. When we saw Charlotte listed, we jumped at adding her as a playmate for Stella, with the hopes Charlotte would help Stella come out of her shell.
For the most part, it has helped. You should see Stella and Charlotte together! They love to rough house together and have fun. Stella, a mix of three different herding breeds, usually gets the upper hand and bosses Charlotte around. They are both black and white–though they have different styles. Stella is your typical black and white Border Collie look and Charlotte has splotches of black on white like a cow. I affectionately started calling them the Squad Cars shortly after we got Charlotte. They have an interesting shared appearance-both have one blue and one brown eye-the same ones!

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention something about my crazy, sweet girl Charlotte. She’s a Pit Bull. Yep. One those.
I’m sure if you have followed me here for awhile, you can tell I truly love pets. I have come to believe that Pit Bulls are a breed that are treated unfairly in the arena of public opinion. Perhaps driven by the fact that the news only seems to report a dog attack if it is a Pit Bull, I get that many people are afraid of this breed. I can tell you from my thirty five years of experience working with dogs, that fear is totally undue.
In my years here at VCA Kennel Club, a few of us have been bitten by a few dogs. Would you be shocked to learn that none of us have been bitten by Pit Bulls? Anyone who works with dogs will tell you the same. Most Pit Bulls are complete goofball dogs like my Charlotte!
When we got Charlotte, I thought that our four dogs were enough. My wife found her and fell in love with her. I was reluctant at first, but I am so happy we have her. She is incredibly unique and full of laughs. She’s always happy and ready to have fun–well, except when she’s asleep and snoring on the couch!
